Ingredients
1-2 tbsp. sauté oil
½ small to medium yellow onion, diced
1-2 garlic cloves, minced
1 lb. lean ground beef
2 tsp. Worcestershire sauce
¾ tsp. salt, or to taste
½ tsp. black pepper, or to taste
1 cup Frank’s Mustard Kraut, lightly drained
Flour for dusting
36 oz. frozen bread dough, thawed (I used frozen dinner roll dough)
8 oz. shredded cheese (I used medium cheddar)
1 egg
1 tbsp. cold water
Sesame seeds for garnish (optional)
Ketchup and Thousand Island Dressing for dipping (optional)
Instructions
- Preheat your oven to 350 degrees F (or per the directions on the package of dough).
- Warm the oil in a large skillet over medium heat. Add the diced onion and cook, stirring occasionally, until soft and translucent; about 8 to 10 minutes. Stir in the garlic and cook just until fragrant; about 1 minute. Next, add the ground beef, Worcestershire sauce, salt, and black pepper. Cook, stirring occasionally, until the ground beef is no longer pink; about 8 to 10 minutes.
- When the beef is cooked through, add the mustard kraut. Stir until well combined and remove from the heat to let cool.
- While the beef mixture is cooling, separate the dough into 6 equal pieces that are about 6 ounces each. Dust flour onto a clean work surface and roll out each portion of dough into a disc that is approximately 9 inches in diameter. Place about ½ cup of the beef mixture in the center of each disc and top with about ¼ cup of the shredded cheese.
- Next, form the kraut burgers. Dip your fingers in some water and moisten the edge of the dough. Fold over the side of the dough closest to you, followed by the opposite side. You’ll want to make sure the dough is slightly overlapping. Next, fold up one of the ends, followed by the opposite end so you have a sort of envelope. Gently pinch the seam together. Turn the kraut burger over and gently shape into a circle. Continue with the remaining burgers.
- Place the burgers onto a rimmed baking sheet lined with parchment paper or aluminum foil.
- In a small bowl whisk together the egg and tablespoon of water. Brush evenly over the kraut burgers. Sprinkle each kraut burger with sesame seeds, if using.
- Bake at 350 degrees F for 15 to 25 minutes, or until the dough is golden brown. Serve immediately with ketchup and thousand island for dipping, if desired.
